№ 13 A guide to life around Emerald Fall 2026 edition

The Niagara Falls neighborhood, at our doorstep.

This guide, published by Emerald Retirement Residence, is an introduction to life beyond our doors. From 5807 Ferry Street the whole of Niagara Falls unfolds on foot, by car and on gentle day trips, and this page collects the places our team loves most, with honest notes on seasons and accessibility. Details were checked in October 2026.

01 Welcome, and how to read the map

Emerald at the centre of its own map.

Imagine a map drawn from our doorstep at 5807 Ferry Street. Around that single point the whole of Niagara Falls arranges itself in gentle rings: the history museum almost next door, the falls a rewarding 25-minute walk, and the wineries, forts and theatres of the wider region a short, pleasant drive away.

On the guide's map, colour does the work. The green rings measure walking time, the gold rings measure driving time. Where the guide adds a note about a season or about accessibility, we pass it along here too, so every outing is a comfortable one.

Walking rings

The green rings on the map mark places you can reach on foot from Emerald Residence, from "across the street" to a gentle 30-minute stroll.

Driving rings

The gold rings show places that are a short drive away, from 5 minutes down the road to comfortable day trips across the Niagara region.

02 On foot

Twelve places, at most a half-hour walk.

Some of the most beloved places in Niagara Falls are within an easy stroll of Emerald Residence. From the history museum across the street to the falls themselves, a quarter hour on foot is usually all it takes to be somewhere wonderful.

The Niagara Parkway and the paved riverside trail make several of these walks flat and pleasant, and many destinations are accessible. When a place is seasonal, we say so, so you always know what to expect.

05 Every season
Trees glowing with warm festival lights along the Niagara riverfront on a snowy winter evening, with the illuminated falls in the distance

Niagara does not close for winter.

The falls are a year-round spectacle, and the neighborhood keeps its welcome through every season. When the days shorten, the Winter Festival of Lights turns the riverfront into a wonderland, this year running from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027.

A few warm-weather favourites, including Niagara City Cruises and the White Water Walk, open for the season from April to November and rest over the colder months. For everything else, there is always something bright to see, all year round.

  • Winter Festival of Lights, November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027
  • Niagara City Cruises, open April to November
  • White Water Walk, open April to November
  • The falls, the parks and the river trail, every day of the year
06 Plan an easy outing

A comfortable day out, made simple.

The best outing is the one that leaves you ready for the next. These gentle habits, shared in the spirit of the guide, help every trip from Emerald feel easy, safe and worth repeating.

Set your own pace

Begin with the places closest to home and build from there. A 20-minute outing counts, and a short, happy visit beats a long, tiring one.

Time it for your energy

Mornings are often the gentlest time of day, with parks quiet and parking easy. Save the busiest spots for times the family visits.

Plan a rest stop

A bench in a garden, a coffee in a bistro or a seat beside the river turns an errand into an outing. Stop before you are tired, not after.

Choose an easy route

Several of these places are fully or partially accessible. Pick them when you want the path itself to be comfortable, and check before you go.

Check the season

Some places close for the season or run only in summer weeks. A quick look at hours before you set out keeps every outing a good one.

Let the weather decide

On soft days, stay in the gardens and the river trail. On bright, busy days, choose indoor spots such as a museum or a greenhouse.

07 Our Niagara wish list

Your Niagara, waiting to be written.

The guide closes with an invitation rather than an ending. Niagara has a way of belonging differently to everyone who lives here, so we have left a wish list in the pages for you to fill in with the places that make your own neighbourhood special. Add a walking route you love, a view that takes your breath away, a treat worth the trip, or a spot you keep for visiting grandchildren.

Share your list with our team while you are here, and we will happily swap our favourites for yours. The neighbourhood is never quite finished, and neither is the fun of finding it.

Come see the neighbourhood for yourself

The best way to know it is to walk it.

Reading about the falls is lovely; stepping out to see them is better. We would be glad to welcome you to Emerald Residence for a tour, and happy to share a meal with you afterwards. Bring your questions, and bring your comfortable shoes, and we will show you the neighbourhood we call home.
